Saturday 8 March
St Austell 4-2 Grampound Res.
(Duchy league Division 5)
Back to Fixtures 2007-8
Grampound arrived a St Austell knowing that their opponents had already clinched the league title and were to be presented with their trophies after the game.
Grampound gave a guard of honour, clapping their opponents as they came onto the pitch.
Ian Jenkin was made skipper for the week, against his former club.
For the second week running, Grampound started the game facing a gale force wind.
Grampound looked shaky at kick off making schoolboy errors from the start. However, with five minutes gone, against the run of play, Ryan Orchard broke forward and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left hand corner.
This spurred St Austell into an attacking frenzy, and wave after wave of attack was thwarted by the excellent back four and the keeper. St Austell did manage to bundle the ball into the net but the goal was disallowed following a foul on Topham.
Orchard and Jenkin, however, looked good up front with Orchard causing problems every time he got the ball and Jenksy holding the ball up well. Amazingly after a half that seemed to go on forever, Grampound went in at the break 1-0 up.
Less than two minutes after the restart, St Austell were back on level terms after an excellent move down the St Austell right ended in a well struck goal.
Grampound's heads however, did not go down and surprisingly they retook the lead on 55 minutes when Yeo excellently broke forward, passed to Mike Berry who took on two St Austell defenders and fired the ball into the bottom right hand corner. At this point St Austell made a couple of substitutions and with the added physical presence of Cooper up front made it even harder for the Grampound back four.
On 60 minutes, Grampound conceded a corner which has floated in. Woodman won the initial header however the ball fell kindly to a St Austell forward who hit a sweet volley into the right hand corner.
At this point St Austell settled into a more natural rythym and they played some excellent football, using the entire pitch. With 15 minute to go, Grampounds resolve crumbled and St Austell got the goal the probably deserved. Grampound did not give up and tried to force an equaliser with the Welsh midfield maestros of James and Moseley playing exceptionally well.
With 4 minutes to go, a rather innocuous challenge from Varnell on Cooper resulted in the St Austell striker being stretchered off. Grampound, now playing against 10 men as all the St Austell subs had been used, flooded forward trying to get an equaliser and with virtually the last kick of the game, St Austell broke through to score their fourth and wrap up the three points.
All round his was an excellent fighting performance by Grampound, who for the scond week running did not get the result their endeavours deserved.
All our thoughts go out to St Austell's Lea Cooper who has unfortunately broken his leg.
