Pelynt Res. 2-6 Grampound Res.

(Hillcrest Reserves Cup, Quarter Final)

Back to Fixtures 2007-8

Although the hosts took the lead inside the opening few minutes, Grampound were always superior and were very deserving to go through to the semi-final. This was a very committed performance against an uncompromising side who tried to make up for a lack of talent with aggression and some tough tackling, but Grampound were in no mood to be second best in this match. Orchard sent Grampound on their way with a 15 minute equaliser when he slid home a neat shot and soon after James pounced from short range to put Grampound ahead. Man of the match John Ward volleyed a third just before half time and Grampound went into the break well on top.

Playing against an increasingly strong wind in the second half was not easy but Grampound did not allow the hosts back into the game. Topham missed a penalty just minutes into the second half when Orchard was felled in the area, but soon after Mike Berry hit a long shot that beat the keeper easily. Grampound hit five when another shot from the youngster hit the net and minutes from the end Topham's free kick was too hot for the keeper to hold and Orchard followed up to slot home his second. Topham rounded off an eventful day by heading an own goal in the dying seconds, but by then the hosts were well beaten.

This was a splendid win for a very committed Grampound Reserves team who now go through to a two-legged semi-final against St Dominick Reserves of Division 1.
