Camelford 1-2 Grampound

(Duchy League Division 2)
Back to Fixtures

After a couple of disappointing results this was a match Grampound had to win and from the start it seemed that Camelford would not have enough to upset the visitors, who passed neatly at times without really creating very much in the opening quarter of an hour. The first real chance to come Grampound's way was put away well by Max Varnell who latched onto a neat ball from Glyn Ford to wrongfoot the goalkeeper from about eight yards. Grampound should have gone on to put the hosts away at this point but once again spurned number of fair chances. At the other end, keeper Cooke had few problems and was well protected by a defence that looked tighter than in recent weeks.

The second half continued in much the same vein, with the introduction of Ryan Maker giving Grampound's passing a little more penetration, and Varnell was unfortunate to have been pulled up by an offside flag when he looked to have timed his run onto Maker's pass perfectly. The Camelford keeper made a great double save when Weeks combined with Varnell, allowing the latter to put in a hard low shot and James, following up, had his shot tipped over. Grampound eventually extended their lead when a long throw from Bartlett on the right was headed past his own keeperby a Camelford defender. Although it was a bizarre goal it made the scoreline a little realistic and Grampound began to play some of their best football as the hosts flooded forward. Shane Weeks ran and battled hard throughou and caused the home team many worrying moments and Dai Moseley nearly extended the lead with a trademark header from Maker's cross. Ten minutes from time Camelford managed to get on the scoresheet when some casual play followed by indecision at the back allowed Karl Spillane to run the ball into an empty net, but Grampound survived the remaining time comfortably to record an important win.
