Grampound 8-1 Goonhavern

(Cornwall Junior Cup Round 1)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound could have taken the lead twice in the opening minutes before a cross was diverted inside the near post by a defender to give Grampound the lead. Grampound's forwards could sense that acres of space were available and it was clear that the Goonhavern defenders would have a very tough afternoon. Several more chances were missed before Grampound extended their lead when Matt Fletcher rose unchallenged to thump a header home from Turton's right wing corner. Goonhavern's keeper made a string of saves to keep the score respectable before, bizarrely, Goonhavern withdrew a player to play in their first-team match at Dobwalls (which they also lost 8-1). Max Varnell had a good shot saved and Ford hit the crossbar before Varnell put Grampound further ahead with a neat finish. Tom Bartlett hit the goal of the game when he cut inside and hit a 30 yarder that hit the roof of the net before the keeper could move and then Ross Turton latched on to a neat Weeks through ball and rounded the keeper to tuck the ball away and give Grampound a 5-0 half-time lead.

Leading so easily and having so much easy possession Grampound players were finding it hard to motivate themselves despite their manager's words and much of the second half was played at little more than walking pace. Indeed, many players work harder than this at a normal training session. Goonhavern continued to play with spirit and deservedly got something from the game when some soft challenges allowed them to score a consolation after 53 minutes. The recovery did not last long as Turton's shot was well saved but the rebound was fired home by Dai Moseley. Shane Weeks looked lively throughout the match and got his deserved goal when he turned in Turton's low cross and Varnell scored his second when he outpaced his marker down the right and hit a low shot into the far corner.

Grampound were well worth their win which could easily have been by at least ten more had they taken half their chances. Goonhavern, however, must have been just about the poorest team to play at the Recreation Ground in the last ten years and one can only feel sad about the demise of a once powerful club.
