Saturday 24 November 2007 Polperro 1-3 Grampound(Duchy League Division 2) On a wet and blustery day Polperro were much faster out of the blocks and some sloppy play by Grampound allowed the home team to press in the opening stages, with Cooke in the away goal having to make a series of saves from close range. Gradually, Polperro's threat faded but they were always in this match. As Grampound worked themselves into the game, their front two of Weeks and Ford became more prominent and Ford should have done better on two occasions when a cross from Weeks found him in space and then minutes later when Greg Dunn's chip gave him a chance. The best moment of the half came when Weeks cut inside his defender and unleashed a fierce low shot that looked goalbound, only for the home keeper to get down to his right and make a splendid save. Grampound opened the second half as they did the first, having to defend desperately, but in their first period of sustained pressure managed to take the lead. Greg Dunn was fouled badly out on the left and his free kick into the area was headed goalwards by Maker. The keeper made another smart save but Ford was on hand to bang the loose ball home from close range. Minutes later, Ford pounced on some indecision between a home defender and his keeper, slipped past them and slid the ball into an empty net to double the lead. Grampound were now well on top and looked very comfortable, but managed to keep the home team interested as a chance was presented to their striker and he headed over Cooke to reduce the arrears. Grampound realised they were going to be in for a torrid last quarter of an hour but eased back into a two goal lead to extract the sting from Polperro when at a corner the ball ran loose and Ford rammed the ball in to claim his third with the home team disputing the goal, claiming it had not crossed the goal line. The referee, however, was confident in his decision and Grampound claimed all the points in what was a bruising encounter where they had to battle all the way. |
