Lostwithiel 3-1 Grampound

(Duchy League Cup Quarter Final)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound played against a hurricane force wind in the first half but should have taken the lead in the first minute when neat passing put Glyn Ford clear just 10 yards out but his shot could not beat the home keeper. With the wind proving very difficult to play against, Grampound were doing well to deny Lostwithiel any opportunities and looked dangerous on the break against a squarish home defence. The opening goal came through a mix up on the edge of Grampound's penalty area and the ball trickled into the back of the net with Harris stranded. The visitors were unlucky to not eget back on terms when a Matt Clements free kick was kept out by the keeper with the aid of the crossbar. Grampound went further behind when they should have cleared the ball, leaving a Lostwithiel striker an easy opportunity after valiant efforts to keep the ball out by Andy James. Grampound had an opportunity to start the second half just a goal down when Weeks was pulled down in the penalty area. He got up to take the spot-kick but his straight shot was beaten away by the home keeper.

The second half was mostly one-way traffic as Grampound and the wind pushed Lostwithiel back. The hosts rode their luck as the ball bounced kindly for them in their own area several times and a Matt Clements free kick was saved fortuitously by the keeper's knees. Grampound were awarded a second penalty when Cooper was blatantly pushed in the area at a corner and Shane Weeks stepped up for a second time. He hit this penalty as poorly as the first but this time the keeper's parry fell to him again and he hit the ball into the back of the net. Grampound sensed that a second goal was possible and pushed on to try and recover the deficit, but it was not to be and in the final minute Lostwithiel broke away and following a couple of fortunate ricochets the ball was at a midfielder's feet fifteen yards out and he found the far corner to put the result beyond doubt.

This was, overall, a poor performance against very moderate opposition, and Grampound's form of one cup and one league win in the ten matches since Christmas is the poorest it has been for some seasons.
