Saturday 1 March 2008 Grampound 3-2 Polperro(Wovina Embroidery League Cup, Round 2) Grampound welcomed back a few players for this game and should have taken the lead when Weeks was put through by Varnell but pulled his shot past the outside of the post. With Grampound looking in command at the back, it looked just a matter of time before the hosts scored but opportunities came and went and the scoreline remained goal-less, with Varnell missing perhaps the best other chance of the half after a good run down the left and low cross by Ford. Grampound took the lead straight after the re-start when some foraging down the right resulted in a weak clearance bouncing towards Varnell on the edge of the area. His low right foot volley evaded the dive of the visiting keeper and the ball nestled in the far corner. Grampound looked good value for the lead but it did bot take long for Polperro to pull the goal back when Fletcher allowed himself to be turned as he tried to pinch the ball from he Polperro striker. This allowed a cross to be put in and Polperro's other striker made no mistake from close range. Polperro surprised even themselves when minutes later they took the lead. A long ball down Grmpound's centre was not dealt with but Tony Ford in goal came to collect. His call was ignored by James, who nodded the ball past him and into the path of a very grateful forward who had the simplest task to tuck the ball away. From a position of being on top and ahead, Grampound now trailed and with the current goalscoring record all feared the worst. Fortune shined on the team, though, when a Polperro defender unnecessarily handled the ball in the penalty area and Weeks slotted home the spot kick for the equaliser. Grampound now pushed forward and the prompting of Cotterill, the control of Maker and the aggressive running of Harris were causing problems for the visitors. The best move of the game when Cotterill released Varnell resulted in the Polperro keeper just managing to get the ball round the post and minutes later Cotterill was pulled back for a very dubious offside when Weeks had played him in. Polperro had their moments in the last half hour with two drives hitting the woodwork but with extra time looming, a series of corners at the Polperro end put them under considerable pressure. At the last, Harris swivelled and shot from ten hards when the ball was not cleared and the goalkeeper could not quite reach the ball. After the ball hit the net for the wnner there were only seconds to play and Grampound now head to a quarter final tie at Lostwithiel. |
