Grampound 1-2 Camelford

(Duchy League Division 2)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound were much depleted through injury and unavailablity and even the starting eleven included Stuart Harris who was clearly not 100% fit but willing to turn out for the team. Grampound looked well out of sorts for much of an uneventful first half but the visitors lacked any real threat. Harris and Cotterill snatched at good chances and the half ended scoreless, with Grampound also frustrated by several doubtful offside flags.

The second half began explosively when the visitors were awarded a contoversial penalty in the its first minute. Fletcher was rolled as he tried to steal the ball on the left of Grampound's penalty area and the forward got to the goal-line and pulled back a dangerous cross. The ball was hit well but hit player-manager Leaney and the referee immediately awarded what appeared to be a very harsh penalty for what he saw as handball. Grampound's protests lasted several minutes, with Maker's name going in the book, before the penalty was duly dispatched to give Camelford a somewhat fortuitous lead. Grampound then started to play with a little more conviction and pressed the visitors deeper and deeper. Half chances came and went, and Harris should have scored when put through by Cotterill. He rounded the keeper but the pace of the ball meant he ran out of ground before he could tap into the empty net. Increasing pressure on the slowish Camelford back four eventually brought reward when Joe Dunn beat defenders down the right and hit in a good cross which Cooper headed goalwards. The keeper could only parry and Harris was on hand to hit the loose ball into the roof of the net. By now Grampound looked as if it would be them only who could take all the points but the goal would not come and in the final minute Camelford were awarded a controversial free kickout on their right. The last cross of the game was met by an unmarked forward whose neat header gave them all the spoils and all Grampound could do was rue the slack marking that allowed a free header six yards out.
