Saturday 25 August 2007 Grampound 4-0 Probus(Duchy League Division 2) The first league game against local rivals Probus was always going to be a tough fixture but Grampound came through with flying colours after being on the back foot in the opening exchanges. Probus played some neat football and were denied the opening goal when Cooke save superbly low to his left. From then on, Grampound were rarely troubled as Weeks and Turton gave the Probus defence lots to think about. The lead came when Weeks was played in down the channel and his cross was stopped by the hand of Probus veteran Phil Webster. Weeks stepped up to slot the spot-kick home to put Grampound ahead. Five minutes later Weeks chased a long high kick from keeper Cooke and challenged the Probus goalkeeper for the bouncing ball. His bravery was rewarded when the ball bounced to Turton who calmly sidefooted into the empty goal from 10 yards. The goal of the game came 5 minutes before the break. Maker played a neat ball down the channel on the right to Turton, whose cross was superbly met by midfielder Andy James who made up 40 yards to slot the ball into the corner first time from 6 yards. Grampound continued to show their superiority throughout the second half and might have extended the lead on a number of occasions. Glyn Ford, moved up front, managed to find lots of space and tormented the Probus back line and was unlucky to not produce a goal. Turton missed a couple of opportunities and Weeks was denied by a highly debatable Webster tackle which looked like a penalty and might have earned him a second yellow or even a straight red card. Stuart Harris came on as substitute and his strong, aggressive approach and running gave Grampound a further dimension and he was rewarded with a superb goal as he outpaced the Probus defenders and smacked a low shot past the Probus keeper. Grampound played out the remaining time without real threat to post a pleasing result and to mark their approach to the season. |
