Wadebridge Town 1-2 Grampound

(Duchy League Div 2)
Back to Fixtures

Playing on a firm but zippy Bodieve Park surface, Grampound passed the ball around neatly in the opening minutes but the hosts soon began to pass well too. Grampound's flow was interrupted when Glyn Ford was injured in a challenge before 10 minutes was up and the team had to be adjusted to accommodate sub Andy James. The team's rythmn was further disrupted by some very harsh free kicks awarded around the penalty box. The opening half an hour was fairly evenly contested but the breakthrough came soon after when neat play down the right by Weeks and Fletcher allowed the latter to pull the ball back in the penalty area. Scott Rosevear controlled the ball and then hit a low right footed shot strongly into the far corner to give the visitors the lead. The remaining quarter of an hour were totally dominated by Grampound. With confidence now flowing, the passing and movement seemed easier and it looked as if they might increase their lead at any minute. Although Wadebridge had failed to carve out a real chance of their own, their danger became vitually non-existant during this period but there was no further score before half time.

Pleased with their performance to this point, Grampound began the second half well, forcing a couple of corners, the second of which led to another goal. Ryan Maker retrieved a long corner past the far post and chipped the ball back into the danger area. Defender James Webb, up for the corner, headed the cross goalwards and it looked odds on that this would be his first goal of the campaign, but the ball hit the inside of the post and bounced out where Matt Fletcher gratefully hit the ball home. Rather than kill off Wadebridge, it was Grampound who seemed to sit back and pressure poured around the Grampound penalty area. The defence held strongly, denying Wadebridge a clear sight of goal, but more bizarre refereeing decisions seemed to hand the initiatve to them at every opportunity. Wadebridge were awarded a penalty, correctly, when Rosevear brought down a forward when the ball looked to be running out and they duly reduced the arrears. The last 20 minutes needed cool nerve, good organisation and lots of spirit as the hosts tried to rescue a point. Again, Grampound defended brilliantly, restricting Wadebridge to long shots but they were very pleased to hear the final whistle and to add the three points to their total.
