Saturday 16 September2006 Pelynt Res. 1-0 Grampound Res.(Duchy League Division 5)
It was, however, Pelynt who started the brighter, stringing some fine moves together but not really bothering the Grampound defence. Grampound slowly came into the game and before long were competing for every challenge with the opposition. On 20 minutes, Dave Juliff felt a pop in his knee and had to go off. He was replaced by Max Varnell and Ian Varnell subsequently took on the captain’s armband and moved into the back three. On 40 minutes a Pelynt midfielder landed on Dunn’s foot. After a lot of treatment an ambulance was called and Dunn was moved to the side of the pitch and was replaced by Chip Varnell. At half-time, the score was 0-0 with neither side really having a clear cut opportunity. The second half proved to be much like the first, with plenty of full-bodied challenges going in both on and off the ball. A partisan crowd were now getting very much behind the home team who continued to battle for every ball. There were still no clear chances until the 87 th minute when Chip Varnell rounded three Pelynt defenders to send a low driven cross across the six yard box, but unfortunately there was no-one on hand to put away this gilt edged opportunity and Pelynt cleared. This clearance found its way to the Pelynt left midfielder who pumped a hopeful ball upfield. This aimless kick, caught the wind and bounced awkwardly in front of Cooke who only just managed to get a hand to it, but palmed the ball to the Pelynt forward who slotted home easily, making the score 1-0. This led to an interesting final few minutes with Grampound throwing everything forward and peppering the Pelynt goal with shots, but Pelynt’s defence held firm. Overall this was a hard fought game that neither team really deserved to win. Ian Varnell was voted man-of-the-match by the opposition
