Grampound Res. 0-4 St Mawgan Res.

(Duchy league Division 3)
Back to Fixtures

The scoreline was extremely flattering to an unconvincing St Mawgan side who hardly created a chance but were presented with four goals through unforgiveable defensive mistakes.

A neat through ball from the returning Mike Bawden put Kev Toms clear on 20 minutes, but he delayed his shot so long that the keeper managed to get out and deflect his weak shot. Minutes later the same striker saw his close range effort well saved by the keeper's fast reactions and it looked just a matter of time before the vulnerable visiting defence conceded. However, missed tackles and headers gave the St Mawgan strikers un-missable chances and suddenly the home team were three down and the game was virtually over.

Grampound spent most of the second half camped in the opposition's half and frequently looked threatening, with Bawden's physical presence causing problems. Bawden had a couple of efforts cleared off the line and a pacy run by Toms nearly brought Grampound a consolation. Max Varnell's industry and passing kept Grampound going forward and Toms repeated his awful error of the first half when played into space with only the keeper to beat. Ian Varnell was unlucky when his header from a corner was stopped on the line by an arm, only for the referee to wave play on. A missed routine header at the back by Woodman allowed a St Mawgan player a clear run at goal and Woodman pulled him down as he tried to recover. The resulting penalty was despatched to give the visitors an unlikely four goal lead. Five minutes from time Bawden was hacked down on the edge of the penalty area and the defender was sent off for some unwise words to the referee. Bawden's free kick came back off the wall to Topham who hit a great volley that was touched over the bar by the keeper.

Grampound should be very disappointed by this result against a very moderate St Mawgan team. A little more resolution and organisation was needed around their own penalty area, together with a little more luck at the other end.
