Grampound 3-1 Biscovey

(Duchy league Division 3)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound at last broke their duck for the season with a commanding win over a slightly disappointing Biscovey side. It did not start like that, though, and at their first challenge in defence Grampound were found wanting. A corner was swung over and there was no proper defensive attack at the ball. When it dropped there was still no conviction and Matt Bennett was able to slam the ball home from close range to give the visitors a second minute lead. Grampound slowly worked their way back into the match and gradually took control. Biscovey were finding it hard to cope with the pace of Shane Weeks, the movement of Glyn Ford and Stuart Harris up front and the dominance of John Brooker in midfield and began to resort to an overly physical approach in a bid to stem the flow. Moseley hit the post from 15 yards and Brooker and Weeks both went close for Grampound with powerful shots. The breakthrough eventually came when a cross from the goal line on the right by Glyn Ford was met by Dai Moseley drifting in on the far post and he headed in from close range.

The second half continued in much the same manner as the first with Grampound rarely under much threat. Biscovey had bolstered their left side to cope with the threat of Weeks but their defence still looked stretched on a number of occasions. Grampound's second goal came from a wide free-kick on the left when Greg Dunn floated the ball in and Biscovey's defenders, dominant in the air until that point, left the ball to their goalkeeper. He could not cope with the aerial challenge of Brooker who was able to nod the ball into the net. Soon after, an injured Weeks was replaced by Keith Cotterill and he put his mark on the game with a superbly taken goal. James Webb played the ball from deep in defence into the path of Cotterill on the right. The veteran Cotterill picked his spot and hit the ball sweetly past the advancing goalkeeper to put the game beyond Biscovey's reach. With five minutes remaining, Grampound's Glyn Ford suffered a serious facial injury and the game was held up for nearly ten minutes waiting for paramedics to arrive. Grampound played out the remaining minutes without alarms and may even have extended their lead but missed a couple of presentable chances. Ford was later released from hospital and was even able to celebrate Grampound's first win of the season later that evening.
