This was a must-win match for Grampound, but it was the hosts who began the quicker, forcing Grampound to hurry and give away possession on numerous occasions. After the opening exchanges, Grampound gradually overcame their slow start and began to look more assured at the back while creating some promising openings that came to nothing. Grampound took the lead on 25 minutes when centre-back Nathan Cooper rose above everyone and powerfully headed into the roof of the net from a corner on the left, and from then on it was the visitors who were in control of the game, with Grampound's Glyn Ford managing to miss two gilt-edged chances to sew the game up even before half time. Garrison Club fought gamely but did not create too much in the danger area and Grampound nearly extended their lead when another Cooper header from a corner was denied by a combination of goalkeeper and crossbar. Matt Fletcher, put clear by Harris on the right, should have done better than grazing the crossbar from 12 yards and it looked to be another game when a host of Grampound chances would go begging. While the lead was only a single goal, Grampound looked nervous as they have had a recent habit of conceding at bad times, but worries were put on one side on 70 minutes when Greg Dunn's cross from the left floated over the home keeper and into the net to double the lead. This was the delighted youngster's first ever goal for the first team and five minutes later another perfect cross from him was challenged for by Glyn Ford, the ball dropping to Stuart Harris who made no mistake from close range to put the visitors into a comfortable three goal lead. Garrison Club continued to press for a goal, but Grampound were in no mood to concede what would have been only a consolation for the home team.
