Grampound 0-1 Foxhole

(Cornwall Junior Cup Round 1)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound, with their indifferent start to the season, welcomed high-flying Foxhole to the Recreation Ground knowing they would have to be at their very best to stay with the Duchy Division 2 leaders. Grampound started well, looking the more assured and passing the ball better than the visitors with several good attacks seeming to unsettle the visitors. On 15 minutes, though, Grampound conceded. A corner from the left was not cleared. Keeper Tony Ford did well to tip a shot onto the bar, but the rebound was hit back through a crowd of players into the corner to give Foxhole the lead. Once ahead Foxhole began to play with a little more confidence but Grampound gradually worked their way back into the game. Glyn Ford's header from a left wing cross shaved the far post and a clever free-kick move brought an excellent save from the Foxhole keeper to keep out a shot from Shane Weeks. John Brooker put Keith Cotterill clear and he should have done better than chipping into the keeper's hands.

Grampound continued to press for much of the second half with Foxhole relying mostly on long balls for their strikers to chase, but Ford in the Grampound goal did not have too much to do. With 10 minutes remaining, Grampound changed formation to throw everything forward and looked a little more vulnerable to Foxhole's tactics, but believed that their gamble had paid off. Glyn Ford was fouled near the Foxhole goal line. Substitute Matt Fletcher took a quick free kick and Cotterill headed into the top corner. Grampound were stunned and furious and Foxhole even seemed surprised when the referee disallowed the goal and made Grampound re-take the kick, which was scrambled away. A relieved Foxhole survived the remaining minutes to win a tie with lots of good football played in a highly competitive but sporting spirit. At the final whistle Grampound were very disappointed that their display had not earned them passage into the next round but its management were very pleased with the performance.
