Grampound 3-1 Wadebridge Town
(Duchy League Division 3)
Back to Fixtures
Grampound, playing this home match at St Dennis FC after vandalism to the pitch at their home ground, overwhelmed a young Wadebridge outfit in the opening exchanges, winning almost every challenge and setting themselves up for what might have been a big win. With Ryan Maker and Dai Moseley controlling midfield, Grampound's wide players Greg Dunn and Nathan Cooper had space in which to threaten and it was no surprise when Grampound opened the scoring within only 5 minutes. A sequence of slick passing found Cooper in space on the right and his chip over the keeper from twenty yards found the far corner to give Grampound an early lead. With Wadebridge offering little threat to a solid Grampound defence, Grampound's midfield felt able to push forward and apply pressure to the visitors, who looked to be at panic-stations on a number of occasions. Grampound extended their lead on 20 minutes when Shane Weeks was fed down the right. He beat his man and his cross was met by Glyn Ford whose volley from 10 yards was in the net before the keeper could move. Ten minutes later Ford hit the mark again. James Webb played the ball from the half-way line down the channel and Ford ran onto it, held off the defender and hit a right foot shot on the run sweetly into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area for a spectacular goal. Dai Moseley almost put Grampound four goals ahead when he received the ball in the penalty area, sidestepped a defender and hit a good strike, only for the Wadebridge keeper to touch it onto the post and the resulting rebound was scrambled away.
Grampound seemed to ease off and Wadebridge upped their game in the second half, but Tony Ford in the Grampound goal had little to do, having his quietest match for weeks with hardly even a cross to catch. Grampound deserved a goal when Weeks hit the net after being put through by Ford's headed flick, but the goal was surprisingly disallowed for offside, and a penalty was denied when another goal-bound effort from Moseley was clearly stopped by a raised hand on the goal line, only for the referee to signal that the game should continue. Wadebridge pulled a goal back when Chris Spiller scored from close range as Grampound defenders, for once, went to sleep, but the hosts succeeded in comfortably playing out time without further alarms to secure a satisfying win. |
