Saltash Utd 0-0 Grampound
(Duchy League Division 3)
Back to Fixtures
Grampound went into their first Duchy League cup tie with four first choice
players sidelined through injury or unavailablity and gave a first start to youngster Dean Dunn. They feared the worst, though, when in the opening minute Queens' Chad Gibson turned Matt Fletcher, moved into the back line for this match, and expertly set up a chance which was blasted over from close range. Grampound's nerves were settled when on 5 minutes Ryan Maker played through to Shane Weeks whose run had beaten the offside trap. Weeks rounded the goalkeeper and managed to tap the ball home as he lost his footing. Grampound gained confidence once in front and the Queens defence found it difficult to cope with the movement of Weeks and Ford, who felt they might get openings in almost every attack. The second goal, though, came from midfielder Dai Moseley whose looping header from a corner was not kept out by Queens players on the goal line. Grampound's midfield was finding space and time, with Ryan Maker controlling the game with his link-up play. Glyn Ford created an excellent chance for himself with a trademark dribble, before a run by Weeks led to him being bundled over in the penalty box as he was shooting. Weeks got up to take the resulting penalty himself, giving the keeper no chance with a firm low shot into the bottom cormer. A few minutes later Grampound scored their fourth. Weeks was pulled down on the edge of the penalty area and Maker stepped up to curl the free kick into the corner of the net. Queens managed to start putting a few passes together but with Grampound's man of the match Matt Fletcher superbly marshalling the dangerous Chad Gibson they never looked like causing too much danger in Grampound's half. Grampound had the better of the second half chances even though possession was fairly evenly shared. Queens consolation goal came with 5 minutes remaining when a corner from the left resulted in a goalmouth scramble and the ball was forced over the line. Grampound now go into the League Cup second round with an away tie at Calstock.
