Grampound 3-1 Lewdown Rovers

(Duchy League Division 3)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound began this match by creating 3 good chances in the opening 5 minutes, all spurned, and were then shocked when a ponderous Lewdown team took the lead soon after. Tony Ford made a very good save, helping over a well struck free kick, but from the resulting corner Grampound looked like statues as a free header was allowed from close range and the ball duly ended up hitting the net. Grampound continued to force the pace, with Weeks and Ford cutting open the Lewdown defence time after time with good movement and decisive passing but the move ended with either a poor final pass or a mis-hit shot. With chances coming so frequently, eventually something had to go right and it was another interchange of passes between Ford and Weeks that released the latter. Weeks had been guilty of snatching at better chances but hit this one perfectly from thirty yards over the advancing keeper into the roof of the net. Somehow, Lewdown survived further setbacks until the break and Grampound realised that they would need to play with a lot more precision and composure if they were to do themselves justice.

Seven minutes after the break Grampound took the lead when at a corner from Greg Dunn, Matt Fletcher rose above everyone to head perfectly into the roof of the net. Minutes later Moseley's header was headed off the line with the keeper beaten and it looked as if the home team might now score with every attack, only for some wayward finishing and a couple of close offside decisions denying them. There was no further score, however, until 12 minutes from time. Weeks looked to be clean through when pulled to the floor by a desperate tackle on the edge of the area. Ryan Maker stepped up to drill the free kick low into the back of the net for Grampound's third.

Grampound could have had a cricket score in this match, with Lewdown having no answer to real pace and movement, but in the end were satisfied with the three points in their promotion bid.
