Roche 0-2 Grampound
(Duchy League Div 3)
Back to Fixtures
Grampound have given some indifferent performances recently, but this was a completely different display. From the outset, although playing a different system from normal, every player looked the part and moved the ball quickly, allowing Roche little opportunity to show anything at all. Harry Cooke , in only his second first team appearance showed great assurance in goal but was largely untroubled, and James Webb, sweeping in place of the injured player-manager Glyn Leaney, had one of his most comfortable games of a tough season. There was no threat at all from a quiet Roche team, but Grampound gave the home defence a torrid time as they tried to keep out a side
who were really enjoying the excellent playing surface. Near misses aplenty came and went around the Roche goal. Glyn Ford's header from a cross from the right brought a brilliant save from the home keeper and Shane Weeks' drive from 25 yards after being neatly teed up scraped a post. On the half-hour good passing released Glyn Ford down the right and he beat his man and crossed. Ross Turton controlled the ball and turned inside in one movement, rolling his defender and creating space at the same time. With his marker out of the way, Turton smashed the ball with his left foot from eight yards past the helpless keeper to give Grampound a very well-deserved lead, which was held until the break.
Grampound enjoyed another excellent period at the start of the second half. Neat passing and movement gave several opportunities until Turton's near-post cross was volleyed home by Ford into the roof of the net less than fifteen minutes into the second period. Roche, in apparent disarray, were run ragged for a time by a rampant Grampound team until their shape was re-established but although they looked better than previously, the visiting Grampound side were rarely under any real pressure. Three away points were well deserved from what is usually a very difficult fixture.
