Grampound 1-3 Maker with Rame
(after extra time; score after 90 min. 1-1)
(Duchy league Knockout Cup Round 1)
Back to Fixtures
Grampound played some scintillating football during the opening period. Their passing and movement left their previously unbeaten Division 1 opponents gasping, stunned and struggling to keep the home team at bay. The opening goal in the tenth minute, when Dai Moseley found space at the back post to head home Keith Cotterill's cross, was well deserved but unfortunately Grampound could not extend the lead, even though Ryan Maker and Luke Kelland had excellent chances after good passing movements to put the home team out of sight. Maker with Rame gradually got back into the game as Grampound began to over-complicate. It was no real surprise when the equaliser came shortly after the interval but the rest of the half was evenly shared although the visiting goalkeeper was rarely tested. The visiting strikers at this stage were given little opportunity to show their worth except when a looping header came back off the bar but it looked like Grampound were in full charge of the game. On 80 minutes a Maker forward was shown a second yellow card for a deliberate foul and was dismissed, but Grampound were not able to take full advantage.
Extra time began with Grampound again pressing forward but unable to create more than a half chance against a resolute Maker defence, which allowed little room for Ford and Kelland. Soon after Harris had made a fantastic save, getting the ball over from close, Maker's hard-running forwards made a chance down their left and the ball was slotted back past Harris' left hand to put the away team into an improbable lead, . Grampound went for broke in the second half of extra-time but managed to concede another to put the tie beyond doubt when the Maker forwards exposed the Grampound defence, who by now were left a little exposed.
Grampound played some of their best football of the season in the opening period against a very good Division 1 team looking for promotion to the Premier Division. Grampound's passing and movement exposed them but were not sustained and Grampound will be disappointed to have lost. The management was even more disappointed to not have taken a valuable scalp when the opportunity was clearly there. |
