Saturday 11 March 2006 South Petherwin 0-1 Grampound(Duchy League Div 3) Grampound began the match well, with Glyn Ford finding the space and time to shoot but instead playing in Alex Brunt who should have tested the goalkeeper from 10 yards but put his shot well wide. Honours were Grampound's in the first half but South Petherwin showed how dangerous they could be when a ball was laid back and a bullet shot found Tony Ford in superb form, his parry clearing the penalty area. Grampound took a well-deserved lead when for the third occasion, Glyn Ford was put clear only to be taken out by a defender about 10 yards out with the keeper rooted. The referee rightly awarded a penalty but did not show the expected red card. Exasperated Grampound players saw that not only no red was shown, nor was a yellow and the player even escaped a word from the referee -- perhaps Cornish junior football plays under different rules from the rest of the world? However, the penalty awarded was coolly dispatched by Shane Weeks, with the keeper given no chance. The second half was fairly even, but the home team did not manage to open up the Grampound defence and the only times that they looked dangerous were from set pieces, which in the end were defended well following all the work done mid-week at the Tuesday night coaching session. Grampound had a number of opportunities to extend the lead, but at the end were satisfied with the win even though it was of the narrowest kind. |
