Saturday 4 March 2006 Grampound 0-2 Godolphin(Duchy League Div 3) Two fairly evenly matched sides played out a less than exciting game, with Godolphin scoring a goal in each half to decide the result. Grampound started very strongly and controlled the opnening 20 minutes. A few decent chances presented themselves but, again, Grampound spurned them when they should have taken the lead, but Godolphin were a little lucky when their keeper punched a corner into his own net only for a someone in the rather bemused Grampound team to be pulled up for a supposed push. On 25 minutes, against the run of play, Godolphin took the lead when 3 opportunities for Grampound to clear were not taken, Godolphin recovered the ball and slipped it down the left side of the defence and the ball was hit home emphatically from 10 yards. From this point Grampound never really recovered their earlier composure and speed on the ball. Grampound were rather fortunate on the stroke of half time when Greg Dunn upended a Godolphin player in the area for what looked like a definite penalty only for the referee to wave play on. The second half continued the pattern of the first, with Harris getting the better of his battle with Chad Gibson, but although the Grampound back 3 looked secure, Godolphin gradually gained a greater proportion of possession in midfield. Shane Weeks, on as substitute, stung the Godolphin keeper's hands with a drive, but some of Grampound's earlier sting was now missing and when Godolphin extended their lead with 15 minutes left there was only going to be one winner. The second goal again came from a set piece, a regular pattern in recent weeks, when the tall Grampound defence did not mark or attack the ball at a corner, allowing a Godolphin player to nod the ball simply past Ford from 6 yards. The conceding of such goals is now a liitle too regular and an increasing worry for the Grampound management. |
