Grampound 3-3 Probus

(Duchy League Div 3)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound again began confidently and it took new signing James Avery only 5 minutes to make his mark. His low cross from wide on the left was put in behind the defenders and Shane Weeks, coming in on the far post hit his shot low across the keeper into the corner to give Grampound the lead. As has happened so often this season, Grampound gave up their lead rather too easily soon after when slack marking at a set piece gave a Probus forward an easy chance from 6 yards. It was Grampound who were making most of the running though and on 18 minutes Avery was released on the right. He accelerated past defenders to the goal line and pulled the ball back to the waiting Glyn Ford whose first time shot beyond the keeper's dive to the right gave Grampound a deserved lead again. Good interpassing around the Probus penalty area ended with Toms sliding the ball inside for Maker to slot the ball home, giving Grampound a comfortable 2-goal lead with barely half an hour gone. The last 10 minutes of the half, though, saw the home side relax and virtually gift two goals to a thankful Probus. Phil Webster was given acres of space to drive on and hit a long shot past Tony Ford. Then, on the stroke of half time slow reactions allowed a Probus to get back on level terms.

The second half belonged territorially to Grampound, with Probus having to defend for long periods, but the breakthrough would not come. The Probus goalkeeper made some good saves, most notably from Maker, but should have been beaten late on when Cotterill hit over from 6 yards after some good inter-passing by Ford and Avery, and again when Cotterill could not quite get a proper final touch when only inches out at the far post.

Grampound will see this as two points thrown away when in a winning position and well on top, a situation that has been the case on too many occasions this season.
