Saturday 20 August 2005 Calstock 0-1 Grampound(Duchy League Div 3) The Grampound team arrived at Calstock in confident mood for the opening league fixture of the season but it was the hosts who made the running in the first ten minutes. Grampound looked very solid at the back with Calstock creating few real openings and gradually the visitors began to exert some pressure of their own, with Glyn Ford and Ryan Maker going close. A shapeless first half ended without score. Grampound began more brightly in the second period, with Max Varnell and Glyn Ford both spurning good chances, and the Calstock 'keeper made a splendid save from Maker's 30 yard chip. Calstock looked most dangerous at set pieces and only two goal-line clearances from corners kept out the home side. The game's turning point came when a Calstock player was dismissed for foul and abusive language and less than a minute later the best move of the match put Grampound ahead. Some neat inter-passing in midfield ended with the ball being spread wide to Varnell on the right. With Bawden dragging his defender to the near post, Varnell crossed to the far where Glyn Ford headed neatly into the corner of the net. Grampound played out the remaining minutes with only a last second scare when a cross from the left was headed back across goal against the inside of the post and into the hands of a grateful Harris. Grampound did not play well, but 3 points and a clean sheet at Calstock in the opening game is an excellent result. |
