St Breward 2-2 Grampound

(Duchy League Div 3)
Back to Fixtures

The opening 25 minutes were possibly Grampound's worst minutes of the season, with the back 3 looking exposed in almost every attack. St Breward took a deserved lead when a short corner was ignored and then the defensive line was slow to close down players with shooting opportunities. The ball, after a couple of half-blocks, fell to a St Breward attacker who hit a fine shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Grampound, to their credit , responded well and pushed the home team back, but had to withstand another couple of chances before getting back on terms when Glyn Ford was put clear and neatly finished past the advancing keeper. Grampound were now the better team but were unable to exploit further their advantage down the slope.

Some harsh words were said in Grampound's dressing room at half time but again they looked second best in the opening minutes of the second period. St Breward made a gilt-edged chance from the left and a half chance down the middle but Grampound survived and began to exert their own pressure. Shane Weeks was certainly wound up by events, including his own booking, and his best contribution came when he was put clear down the right. His hard, low cross from the goal-line was met perfectly by Glyn Ford who hit the ball high into the net to give Grampound a, by now, deserved lead. St Breward continued to hit long high balls to their big striker and looked threatening from set pieces but Grampound appeared to be in charge. A wonderful move involving some short passing and then a long ball from John Brooker put Weeks free on the edge of the area, but he put his first-time volley just wide when he might have taken a touch first. Some aggressive running from St Breward's forwards, and some even more aggressive pushing on occasions - penalised by the referee- made it hard work at the back, but when a failure to clear properly, followed by a another push on Glyn Leaney, gave the home team the opportunity to level the scores. It was disappointing for Grampound to give up 2 points when they had been by far the better team for long periods of the game.
