Grampound 1-1 RAF St Mawgan

(Duchy League Division 3)
Back to Fixtures

Despite their differing league positions, both clubs were in similar form and a tight game was always likely.

The home side started brightly and created several early openings. Dai Moseley was denied twice in quick succession when his long range effort was saved by the keeper and a goal mouth scramble saw his shot blocked off the line.

The RAF slowly got themselves into the game and had a few openings of their own. Anderson in the Grampound goal was continuing his good form, but was well protected by the back four of Cundy, Woodman, Sims and Chris Paynter, the Peter Pan of Grampound.

With about half an hour gone, it was the Airmen who got the breakthrough, some rare sloppy defending left Baddelly free to slot home. Going behind, sparked Grampound back into life, and the front two of Sambells and Webb had good chances late in the second half.

After the break, it was St Mawgan who woke up first and nearly went two up in the first minute. However, Grampound, pressed hard and equalised from a well worked free-kick. Moseley's dead ball found the powerful Moorcroft at the far post, his header back across goal was flicked on by Sambells and nodded in by Paynter from all of 18 inches.

With half an hour remaining, it really was anybody's game. At times the infamous Grampound surface made both strikers and defenders look silly, but both teams seemed intent on winning the game. Grampound pulled off Ivan on the left of midfield and threw the young and sprightly May up front. The Airmen made some substitutions of their own but it was the young Grampound Striker who made the biggest impression, doing everything but score.

Despite late chances at both ends, there were no further goals and a well deserved point was welcomed by both teams. That point may prove a little more important to Grampound at the bottom than to their more lofty opponents.
